The German National Forest Inventory (NFI) is an important instrument for forest policy of the federal and state governments. It is also increasingly used for applied research on tree species distribution and site productivity. However, data on soil and climate at the NFI sites are covered only unsatisfactorily. Extensive site and stand information is available for plots of the European Forest Soil Inventory, generated through the Biosoil project.
The primary objective of this project is therefore to use excellent information from a smaller number of plots of forest soil inventories to develop site productivity models. By using forest growth models, it is possible to estimate the future potential raw timber stocks and the carbon storage potential of forests under present and projected future climate.
