Leaf area is the largest part of a forest's surface and the only exchange surface for transpiration, photochemical light absorption and assimilation. Numerous ways exist to assess the total leaf area of a forest and only a few of them are standard in the actual version of the ICP-Forests manual that can be found here:Chapter17_LAI.pdf .
